Annual Training (AT) Planning: All students participating in the Health Professions Scholarship Program are required to perform 45 days of AT each year. One of these AT periods should be used to complete Officer Development School (ODS). We prefer students complete ODS prior to the start of school as academic schedules often conflict in later years. Students who do not complete ODS prior to start of school should attempt to attend between 1st and 2nd year. At this time the 21 June 2008 class is completely full and there is a significant wait list. If you are not already on the schedule or on the wait list for this class, you will not be going.

For those who did complete ODS prior to the start of school, you will note there are 5 fiscal years in a 4 year HPSP student's term because the fiscal year and the academic year do not align. The fiscal year begins on October 1. With only 4 ATs, this means you need to skip a year of AT. When you skip depends on your academic track and your individual needs. Here are some guidelines for AT.

For medical students, the standard recommendation is to perform 2 ATs at the beginning of your 4th year, one in Aug/Sep and the other in Oct/Nov (using the fiscal year to your advantage). I like to call these your audition rotations. They should be done at your top 2 Navy facilities for internship. This gives you the opportunity to meet the program staff, them to meet you, and you to demonstrate how wonderful you are so that the program decides they can't live without you. This face time is invaluable and critical to obtaining your internship of choice. When ranking students, many program directors will bypass well qualified students because they have had no contact with them. It is recommended that you plan ahead and attempt to schedule rotation dates by calling the hospital coordinators at the end of January or early February. Prior to that time, these individuals will be busy working with pending interns. Contact information for the coordinators is available at http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/navmedmpte/accessions/Pages/SchedulingClinicalClerkships.aspx. So, with ODS being AT number 1 and audition rotations being 3 and 4, that leaves one remaining. Often students will take school orders sometime in the second year, but there are other opportunities for research and military unique training. Contact Mr. Pelot or CDR Mclean for further information.

For dental, optometry, and physician assistant students as well as Financial Assistance Program participants, there is no requirement that you perform rotations at Naval facilities. Typically your remaining ATs will be school orders. School orders allow you to receive your active duty pay and allowances while continuing with your studies. You do not need to wear a uniform or travel to a Navy facility, just continue going to school. While on school orders your job is school, so you need to remain in the area of your school. No trips to Cancun or visits to home in another state. School orders may be scheduled at any time during the year, so plan it when classes are in session and it is convenient for you.

Annual Verification: Every year, students should submit an annual verification form. This form is available on the website at http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/navmedmpte/accessions/Pages/Forms.aspx

. During your birth month, our medical records staff will send you a notice for your annual verification. Keeping your verification date around your birthday is a convenient way to remind yourself to remain current with this obligation. HIV is due every 2 years. If you are not near a military medical treatment facility or reserve center, you may have this drawn at your student health clinic. We will reimburse you for the cost of the test. This must be a blood test. The rapid test is not acceptable.

Weight Standards: It is your responsibility to maintain an appropriate level of fitness. This includes meeting Navy weight standards. Maximum weights are available in the student handbook. Failure to meet weight standards will not get you kicked out of the Navy, but can prevent you from being selected for residency and promotion.

E-mail to OH. When sending e-mail to OH, please limit each e-mail to one issue so we can track its completion. There are several items you should include in your communication:

      1) Your full name
      2) Your program - med school, dental school, FAP, NADDS, NCP etc.
      3) Your last name and issue in the subject line.

Do we have all of this information? Yes, but having to research it slows down our ability to take action on your issue. If we have this upfront, we can resolve your issue and those of others faster.

Results for Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Graduate Dental Education (GDE) Selection Boards: The results for the GME and GDE selection boards have been released. For the GME board, I am pleased to state over 70% of student got their first choice in program and location. This is great considering the shortfall of applicants for positions. The class of 2009 is the smallest in the history of the program. For those who did not get exactly what they wanted, please be assured that every effort was made to meet the needs of both the students and the Navy.

Closing Reimbursement Accounts for 2009 Graduates: Students graduating this spring need to submit all reimbursement requests and travel claims as soon as possible and before 1 March. If you have not filed a travel claim for an AT, a reimbursement request for books or equipment, or reimbursement for board, do so now. We want to give you all that you are due. We do not want to see a long list of "required" books and equipment purchased in March or April.
