[edit] General Impressions

I can vouch for Camp Pendleton, if you like Southern California (Go Balboa intern class 2009!)

The hours are usually 0730 to 4, and they let you do pretty much everything, they have tons of procedure clinics, and are excited to let you dabble in any specialty in the hospital.

I got to spend a week at the sports medicine SMART clinic with the School of Infantry Marines, lots of hand on sports medicine/ ortho etc.

I also got to go chill with the flight surgery docs in clinic and at the hangar.

There was one week of inpatient, but I still managed to surf every evening at San Onofre (legendary surf spot) and go get great sushi in La Jolla a few times.

The marine corps gyms are amazing, lots of weights, classes, great running on the beach.

the FM residents were very nice, we went out a lot, pizza, beer, surfing, parties, etc together. they were pretty chummy. And Camp Pendleton is georgeous. The hospital is nested in a little oasis by a lake with an good running path around it. They gyms are top notch and the surfing is legendary at San Onofre. I liked it so much I came back as a 4th year to do a dermatology rotation there.

There was tons of OB/Gyn patients, being a marine base, and you take OB call on the labor deck, and ER call in the ED. All high yield and everyone tries to help you and get you into cases/procedures/ deliveries/etc. if you show a modicum of interest.

OK i'm biased, but the Camp Pendleton program has 12 residents a year for a total of 36 who pretty much run the hospital, and fill in the surgery, ED, OB, sports medicine needs. There were AOA residents and total beach bums in the program. A lot of guys/gals have done GMO time, and are a source of leadership, perspective, and information.

The marines are awesome, and their families are inspiring. I got to do several days at the sports medicine clinic, very high yield.

Just my perspective take it or leave it.
